How to use this calculator
Enter your selling price and product cost, select your marketplace (Amazon or Flipkart), pick your product category and shipping model, then adjust packaging cost, return rate, and ad spend to match your actual numbers. The calculator instantly shows your net profit, net margin %, and a full fee breakdown — including the referral fee, closing fee, shipping charges, and GST on platform fees.
Amazon fee changes — March 2026
Amazon India removed referral fees for products priced at or below ₹1,000 effective March 16, 2026. This is a significant change for sellers in fashion, home, beauty, and other high-volume low-price categories. This calculator reflects those updated rates. Always confirm current rates on Amazon Seller Central.
5 ways to improve your profit margin on Amazon & Flipkart
Most sellers focus only on the selling price and product cost. But your real margin is determined by five levers — and you can move all of them.
Tip 1
Price above break-even with headroom
Use the break-even price this calculator gives you as a floor, not a target. Build in at least 15–20% margin above it so you can run discounts, absorb return spikes, or increase ad spend without going negative.
Tip 2
Cut your return rate with better listings
Each 1% rise in return rate reduces your net margin by roughly 0.5–1%. Accurate size charts, honest descriptions, and real product photos are the cheapest margin improvement you can make.
Tip 3
Choose the right shipping model by zone
Easy Ship national can cost Rs.80–120 per shipment. If most of your orders are local or regional, switching to Easy Ship local or self-ship for nearby pincodes can save Rs.30–50 per order — directly on your margin.
Tip 4
Bundle to raise your average order value
Closing fees and some shipping slabs are flat. A bundle priced at Rs.1,800 instead of two separate Rs.900 orders pays one closing fee and one shipping charge, compressing platform costs as a % of revenue.
Tip 5
Reduce packaging weight to hit a lower slab
Amazon and Flipkart charge shipping by 500g slabs. A product at 520g pays the 1kg rate. Switching to lighter packaging or a smaller box can drop you to the 500g slab and save Rs.20–40 per order.
Bonus tip
Negotiate product cost at volume
A 10% reduction in product cost has a bigger margin impact than a 10% reduction in any platform fee, because product cost is typically the largest single line item. Use this calculator to model what a Rs.30 or Rs.50 cost reduction does to your monthly profit at 200 orders.
What actually eats your margin — and by how much
Sellers are often surprised by how much disappears before net profit. Here's how the costs stack up on a typical ₹1,499 product in Home & Kitchen shipped nationally via Easy Ship:
| Cost | Amount | % of Selling Price |
|---|---|---|
| Product cost | ₹450 | 30.0% |
| GST embedded in price (18%) | ₹229 | 15.3% |
| Referral fee (9%) | ₹135 | 9.0% |
| Easy Ship shipping | ₹65 | 4.3% |
| Ad spend / order | ₹50 | 3.3% |
| Return cost (5% rate) | ₹28 | 1.9% |
| Closing fee | ₹12 | 0.8% |
| GST on platform fees | ₹38 | 2.5% |
| Net profit | ₹492 | 32.8% |
GST embedded in your selling price is the most overlooked cost — you collect it on behalf of the government, so it is not your revenue. On an 18% GST product, only ₹1,270 of a ₹1,499 price is your actual revenue.
How much do marketplace fees cost you vs. selling on your own store?
Marketplace fees are percentage-based — the more you sell, the more you pay. At scale, this becomes significant. Here's how the numbers look at different monthly volumes on a ₹1,499 product (Amazon, Home & Kitchen, Easy Ship national):
50 orders/mo
₹15,250
paid in platform fees
₹3,000–5,000 saved
moving repeat buyers to direct
200 orders/mo
₹61,000
paid in platform fees
₹12,000–18,000 saved
moving repeat buyers to direct
500 orders/mo
₹1,52,500
paid in platform fees
₹30,000–45,000 saved
moving repeat buyers to direct
Marketplaces are powerful for discovery — you should absolutely list there. But repeat buyers who already know your brand are expensive to serve through a marketplace. Every repeat order on Amazon or Flipkart pays the full referral fee again, even though you didn't need the marketplace to acquire that customer.
A parallel direct-to-consumer storefront — your own branded online store — lets you convert repeat customers to a zero-referral-fee channel. Platforms like MiniTaka charge a flat monthly subscription rather than a per-order percentage, so your margin on direct orders stays constant regardless of volume.
The practical playbook for Indian sellers
- Use Amazon & Flipkart for new customer acquisition and product discovery
- Add your store link and packaging inserts to every order — invite customers to re-order direct
- Offer a small loyalty discount (5–8%) that costs you less than the marketplace referral fee
- Over time, shift repeat buyers to your own storefront where you keep the full margin
Frequently asked questions
Does this calculator include GST correctly?
Yes. The calculator treats your selling price as GST-inclusive and strips out the embedded GST using the standard formula (Price × GST% / (100 + GST%)). GST on platform fees (18%) is also calculated separately and added to your costs.
What is the referral fee on Amazon India?
Amazon referral fees range from 2% to 15% depending on product category. Electronics is typically 5–8%, fashion 10–15%, home & kitchen 9–12%, books 8%. This calculator uses the current published rate for whichever category you select.
What is the closing fee on Amazon and Flipkart?
Closing fee (also called "fixed closing fee" or "fixed fee") is a flat per-order charge that varies by price band and category. It typically ranges from ₹2 to ₹25 and is charged in addition to the referral fee.
How is the break-even price calculated?
Break-even price is the minimum selling price at which net profit is zero. The calculator solves for this iteratively — because referral fees are a percentage of selling price, the break-even point changes with the price itself.
Can I use this for Ajio or other marketplaces?
Currently the calculator covers Amazon India and Flipkart. Ajio and other marketplace support is on the roadmap.
