Why compare marketplace vs direct selling?
Marketplaces like Amazon and Flipkart are excellent for customer discovery — millions of buyers browse them every day. But they charge a referral fee (8–15%), a closing fee, GST on those fees, and potentially a shipping fee on every single order. These percentage-based costs scale with your revenue, not your profit. The more you sell, the more you pay.
An owned storefront flips this model. You pay a flat monthly fee — no per-transaction referral or closing charge. Your payment gateway (Razorpay, Paytm etc.) charges a small flat percentage, but that's typically 2% vs 9–15% on marketplaces. The economics shift significantly in your favour once you have a base of repeat buyers who already know and trust your brand.
How the MiniTaka fee model works
Starter
₹599/mo
First 25 orders free
3% on orders 26+. No referral fee. No closing fee.
Growth
₹899/mo
First 25 orders free
3% on orders 26+. Priority support + advanced analytics.
Pro
₹1,299/mo
First 25 orders free
3% on orders 26+. Custom domain, white-label, full API.
The 3% MiniTaka commission after 25 orders is still far lower than Amazon's referral fee (typically 9–15% for most categories). And unlike a marketplace, MiniTaka doesn't charge a closing fee or GST on top of the commission — so your cost calculation stays simple.
The repeat-buyer strategy: how Indian sellers are doing it
The most effective Indian D2C sellers don't abandon marketplaces — they use them as a discovery engine and convert repeat buyers to their own channel. Here's the playbook:
Use marketplaces for new customers
Amazon and Flipkart give you access to millions of buyers. Sell there at marketplace margins to acquire them.
Add a branded insert in every box
A small printed card with your store URL and a QR code costs ₹2–3. It tells repeat buyers where to find you direct.
Offer a loyalty discount smaller than the referral fee
A 5–7% direct discount costs you less than the 9–15% referral fee — both you and the buyer come out ahead.
Collect repeat buyers over 3–6 months
It takes time. But once 20–30% of your volume is direct, the economics change materially.
Scale your own store, not your marketplace spend
Direct orders don't need ad spend. As more volume shifts direct, your blended margin improves without extra cost.
Frequently asked questions
Does this calculator account for GST on the MiniTaka plan subscription?
The subscription cost shown is the base fee (₹599/₹899/₹1,299). GST at 18% on the subscription would be an additional ₹108/₹162/₹234 per month. This is currently not included in the per-order breakdown but you should factor it in for your own planning.
What does "payment gateway fee" include?
Razorpay, Paytm, PhonePe and similar gateways typically charge around 2% of transaction value. An 18% GST is applied on top of this fee. The tool computes it as: selling price × 2% × 1.18 = effective PG cost per order. You can edit the rate in the inputs.
Does the marketplace calculator include COD charges?
No — the marketplace fee model uses standard prepaid (non-COD) assumptions. COD adds additional charges on both channels. For a detailed COD vs prepaid analysis, use our COD vs Prepaid Profit Calculator (coming soon).
Can I move all my orders to my own store?
Not immediately, and probably not fully. Marketplaces continue to be important for new customer discovery. The realistic playbook is a hybrid: marketplace for new buyers, own store for repeat orders.
